    Headline Scariness: 4

Pretty alarming headline, since if you have a baby, chances are he eats food, and most people don’t want to poison their baby.

    Actual Danger: 1

Yes, there was a batch of Plum Organics apple and carrot baby food pouches that might be tainted with botulism, but only one batch (UPC 890180001221 with a sell by of “May 21, 2010”, which is sold only in Toys R Us. There have been no reported illnesses from it.

    Headline Scariness: 4

The headline shown on the page is a more passive “E. Coli Path Shows Flaws in Beef Inspection” but I’m going with the one they show in the page’s title bar. It certainly sounds bad.

    Actual Danger: 3

It IS pretty bad. Eating a burger and ending up paralyzed is pretty serious stuff. And the flaws in the inspection process obviously need addressing, and fast. The whole meat factory concept is looking a little suspect these days.

    Headline Scariness: 4

Ok, that sounds pretty bad. Mercury is bad, and it’s everywhere!

    Actual Danger: 3

Reading the article, only 1/4 of the fish had potentially dangerous levels of mercury. But still, that’s a lot of fish with high mercury levels.

    Headline Scariness: 5

    Oh. My. God.

    Bacon causes cancer!!!

    Actual Danger: 1

Well, actually, the article says that if you don’t exercise, and eat a ton of meat, you increase your cancer risk. But hinting at a link between bacon (the big “B”) and cancer (the big “C”) makes for a much better headline.
